Julio Buenano dedicated his life to serving others. By the age of 30, he had worked as a lifeguard, paramedic, firefighter, and pediatric emergency room nurse. Through his work in the ER, he witnessed the critical need for organ transplantation and understood the profound impact that donors can have on patients and their families.
In 2010, just four months after the birth of his daughter, Lucia, Julio suffered a spinal injury in a beach accident. Despite every effort by his medical team to save his life, the damage to his brain was too severe and Julio passed away.
Because of his decision to become an organ, eye and tissue donor, Julio was able to continue helping others even after his passing. His donated organs saved four lives directly, while his eye and tissue donations helped more than 100 people through restored health, healing and improved quality of life.
“Julio lives on in the many people who are here today because of his generosity as a donor,” said Julio’s mother, Angela. “I carry Julio with me everywhere I go, in this mission he left behind.”
Julio’s legacy continues through his daughter, his family, and the countless individuals he inspired. His story serves as a reminder that organ donation creates hope in the midst of loss and that one person’s decision can have a lasting impact on countless others.
