Gema Marti was born healthy and spent her early childhood like any other kid. That changed when she became critically ill and was diagnosed with liver failure at just eight years old.
She was hospitalized and went into a coma for two weeks. She recalls the fear her family carried knowing that her time was limited. Then, the call came that Gema had matched with a donor.
Her liver transplant was successful from the moment she woke up from surgery.
Now, 32 years later, Gema remains deeply grateful to the donor family who made the brave decision to say “yes” to organ donation during a time of profound loss. Gema lives each day with intention and gratitude, honoring those who gave her a second chance at life.
“Through the gift I was given, I have now gone on to give my kids life,” Gema said.
For years, Gema wasn’t sure she could have children because of her transplant. Against the odds, she became a mother. One of her sons carries the middle name of her transplant surgeon, a lasting reminder of the care that saved her life.
Today, Gema continues to share her story to raise awareness about organ donation. Her life shows how one donor’s decision can shape generations of lives.
