Charlton L. Johnson

When Judith Charlton’s son, Charlton L. Johnson, was born, doctors diagnosed him with Nephrotic Syndrome and predicted he would not live past the age of four. Determined to give her son every opportunity, Judith became a living kidney donor when Charlton was just three-and-a-half years old.

Although the transplant initially gave him a new chance at life, chronic rejection eventually led to kidney failure and the need for a second transplant. Throughout decades of medical challenges, Charlton faced every obstacle with remarkable courage and resilience. Supported by his family’s unwavering love, he far exceeded expectations, living 33 years and inspiring those around him with his strength and perseverance.

When Charlton passed away, Judith chose to transform her grief into purpose. She founded the Charlton L. Johnson Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing donor registrations, educating communities about kidney health, and supporting transplant patients and their families. In 2020, Judith launched a support group for recipients, living donors, caregivers, and families navigating the transplant journey. What began as a local gathering has grown into a monthly virtual community connecting participants across the United States and around the world, including New Zealand and Nigeria. The group continues to provide education, encouragement, and a reminder that no one faces their journey alone.

For Judith, sharing Charlton’s story honors the values he embodied throughout his life: perseverance, compassion, and hope. Charlton’s story is a testament to the power of organ donation and the hope it provides. It can extend far beyond one family, creating a legacy that continues to educate, connect, and inspire people everywhere.
