Serving Franklin County as sheriff for the past 10 years has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I love this community, and I love being there for people in their hour of need. This April, during National Donate Life Month, I want to share a personal experience that tested my ability to serve in ways no badge could prepare me for.
Ten years ago, I noticed my kidney function declining. I monitored my kidney function regularly, and last year, it reached a deadly low. That meant dialysis or a kidney transplant.
I was in shock. I had always prioritized staying active and being healthy. I was a marathon runner who welcomed the physical and mental demands of a long, grueling race. But kidney disease still found me.
With my diagnosis, I had a different marathon ahead. And this race had no clear course or known finish line.
